Ilson Gnome

🧙‍♂️ Welcome to Gnome Island: The Tale of Ilson’s Littlest Legend

It all kicked off in January 2015, when a lone gnome suddenly appeared on the new roundabout outside Morrisons on Nottingham Road in Ilkeston. No fuss. No explanation. Just sitting there with a look that said, “This is mine now.”

Locals spotted him. Then more gnomes started turning up. Not all at once – and never for long. Because these gnomes are wanderers. They like to pop up unexpectedly, disappear without warning, and cause a bit of harmless mischief around the town (and occasionally much further afield).

Before long, folk started calling the spot Gnome Island. By early 2015, a petition to officially name the roundabout had racked up over 500 signatures. And in March 2015, Erewash Borough Council voted to make it official. One councillor even joked it was “gnome joke” – and for once, no one rolled their eyes.

Since then, Ilson Gnome has become more than just a local mascot. He’s turned up at community events, popped up all over social media, and somehow found himself on the world stage at Glastonbury Festival. Yep – every year, the Ilson Gnome flag proudly waves above the crowd, often photobombing the BBC’s coverage and winding up camera crews in the process. That’s fame, Ilson-style.

Today, Ilson Gnome is part local legend, part roaming rascal. Whether he’s highlighting a community cause, raising a smile, or just stirring the pot, he’s here to remind us all that mischief has its place – and Ilkeston’s still got its sense of humour.

So keep your eyes peeled. The gnomes might not always be on the island – but you can be sure they’re up to something.
